GETTYSBURG VETERANS


Here is the list of Civil War veterans within both sides of my family that were present at the Battle of Gettysburg from July 1-3, 1863. The list is put together by regiment. William Tatum WoffordMaternal Cousin – Brigadier General

General Wofford began the war as a Captain in the 18th Georgia but was promoted to Colonel soon thereafter. Upon the death of General TRR Cobb at Fredericksburg, Wofford was promoted to Brigadier General and commanded “Wofford's Georgia Brigade” throughout the war. At Gettysburg Wofford's Brigade saw action primarily in the Wheat Field.


    Cobb's Legion

    1. Pvt. Alexander Stephens Whelchel - Paternal Uncle in Co. B

    2. Pvt. Gaines Calvin Ownby – Paternal Cousin in Co. H

    3. Pvt. Harvey Calhoun Parks – Maternal Cousin in Co. C (Possibly was at home recruiting, records don't indicate conclusively)

    4. Pvt. David Rivers Parks – Maternal Cousin in Co. C

Cobb's Legion at Gettysburg was in Wofford's Brigade of McLaw's division under Longstreet. They were engaged on the 2nd day of battle and followed the attack of General Barksdale into the Wheatfield. They suffered 2 killed and 20 wounded in the battle.



    Phillip's Legion

    1. Pvt. Andrew Jackson Blackwell (U#7) Co. E

    2. 5th Sgt. Jesse Green Blackwell (U#8) Co. E

Phillip's Legion at Gettysburg was in Wofford's Brigade of McLaw's division under Longstreet. They were engaged on the 2nd day of battle and followed the attack of General Barksdale into the Wheatfield. They suffered 4 killed and 24 wounded in the battle.


    3rd Batallion, Georgia Sharpshooters

    1. Pvt. William Benton Wofford – Maternal Cousin in Co. A

The 3rd Battalion, Georgia Sharpshooters were a relatively new unit formed from the best marksmen in Wofford's Brigade. They served primarily as skirmishers and scouts. They fought at Gettysburg with Wofford's Brigade in the Wheatfield.


    9th Georgia Infantry

    1. Pvt. Jasper DeKalb Andrews - Maternal Cousin in Co. D


The 9th Georgia Infantry at Gettysburg was in Anderson's Brigade of Hood's Divison under Longstreet. They were engaged on the 2nd day and attacked through the Wheat Field taking heavy artillery fire. They held the field briefly but were forced to retire. The regiment suffered 28 killed and 115 wounded.


    10th Georgia Infantry

    1. Pvt. William T. Ownby (C#52) Co. D


The 10th Georgia Infantry at Gettysburg was in Semmes's Brigade of McLaw's Division under Longstreet. They were engaged on the 2nd day and supported the main attack toward the Wheatfield and Rose Hill. General Paul Semmes was mortally wounded leading the brigade. The regiment suffered 9 killed and 77 wounded.


    16th Georgia Infantry

The 16th Georgia at Gettysburg was in Wofford's Brigade of McLaw's Division under Longstreet. They were engaged on the 2nd day and were part of the attack that drove the Federals through the Wheatfield to Little Round Top before retiring. The regiment suffered 9 killed and 52 wounded.


    18th Georgia Infantry

    1. Pvt. Joseph McEver – Paternal Uncle in Co. A


The 18th Georgia at Gettysburg was in Wofford's Brigade of McLaw's Division under Longstreet. They were engaged on the 2nd day and were part of the attack that drove the Federals through the Wheatfield to Little Round Top before retiring. The regiment suffered 3 killed and 16 wounded.





22nd Georgia Infantry

    1. 1st Lieut. Wyatt Lee – Paternal Cousin in Co. C (WOUNDED AND CAPTURED)

    2. 4th Corp. William Jack Lee – Paternal Cousin in Co.C (WOUNDED)

    3. Pvt. Monroe Lee – Paternal Cousin in Co. C


The 22nd Georgia at Gettysburg was in Wright's Brigade in Anderson's Division under Hill. They saw action on the 2nd day and attacked the Federal lines north of the Peach Orchard at the Codori Farm. They captured several guns and routed the Federals but their supports on both flanks did not keep up forcing the to fall back abandoning their captured guns. The regiment lost 21 killed and 75 wounded.


    24th Georgia Infantry

    1. Pvt. Harrison Maddox – Paternal Cousin in Co. F

    2. Pvt. William Daniel Parks – Maternal Cousin in Co. C


The 24th Georgia at Gettysburg was in Wofford's Brigade of McLaw's division under Longstreet. They were engaged on the 2nd day of battle and followed the attack of General Barksdale into the Wheatfield. They suffered 4 killed and 32 wounded in the battle.


    38th Georgia Infantry

    1. Pvt. Washington LaFayette McDonald – Paternal Cousin in Co. I


The 38th Georgia at Gettysburg was in Gordon's Brigade of Early's Division under Ewell. They were engaged on the first day at approached the town on the Harrisburg Rd. They were attacked from Barlow's Knoll before counter-attacking and driving the Federals through the town. The regiment suffered 12 killed, 51 wounded, and 29 captured.


    44th Georgia Infantry

    1. Pvt. William Jones Whitehead – Paternal Uncle in Co. C


The 44th Georgia at Gettysburg was in Dole's Brigade of Rode's Division under Ewell. They were engaged on the first day and participated first in the fight on Barlow's Knoll before moving on and striking the Federal 1st Corps in the rear which completed the rout of the Federals who retreated through the town. The regiment suffered 10 killed, 49 wounded, and 9 captured.


    51st Georgia Infantry

    1. 4th Sgt. James Frederick Andrews – Maternal Cousin in Co. H

    2. 1st Cpl. Warren S. Andrews – Maternal Cousin in Co. H


The 51st Georgia Infantry at Gettysburg was in Semmes's Brigade of McLaw's Division under Longstreet. They were engaged on the 2nd day and supported the main attack toward the Wheatfield and Rose Hill. General Paul Semmes was mortally wounded leading the brigade. The regiment suffered 8 killed and 47 wounded.


    1st Texas Infantry

    1. Pvt. Harvey Pinson – Paternal Cousin in Co. M


The 1st Texas Infantry at Gettysburg was in Robertson's Brigade of Hood's Division under Longstreet. The brigade completed a forced march and arrived on the field around 4:00 pm on the second day and attacked the Federal left. The 1st Texas cleared the Devil's Den and pushed forward to the Rocky Ridge. The regiment suffered 24 killed and 54 wounded.


    4th North Carolina Infantry

    1. Sgt. William Little Allen – Paternal Cousin in Co. A


The 4th North Carolina at Gettysburg was in Ramseur's Brigade of Rodes' Division under Ewell. They were engaged on the first day and participated in the rout of the Federals along the Mummasburg Rd. The regiment suffered 8 killed, 24 wounded, and 24 captured.


6th Alabama Infantry

    1. Pvt. Reuben H. Tucker – Maternal Cousin in Co. A or K

The 6th Alabama at Gettysburg was in O'Neal's Brigade of Rodes' Divison under Ewell. They were engaged on the first day and attacked in concert with Ramseur's Brigade to drive the Federals through the town along the Mummasburg Rd. The regiment suffered 18 killed 113 wounded.


    7th Tennessee Infantry

    1. Pvt. Burrell Alexander Barker - Paternal Cousin in Co. F


The 7th Tennessee at Gettysburg was in Archer's Brigade of Heth's Division under Hill. They were engaged on the 1st day as well as the third. On the first day they attacked the Federal left in the eary stages of the battle. On the third day they were placed in Pettigrew's command and participated in Pickett's Charge.

    55th North Carolina Infantry (ET)

    1. Capt. George A. GilreathPaternal Cousin in Co. B (KILLED)

    2. 1st Lieut. Leander Gilreath – Paternal Cousin in Co. B

    3. 4th Sgt. Noah Gilreath, Jr. – Paternal Cousin in Co. B


The 55th North Carolina was in Davis' Brigade of Pettigrew's Division under Hill. They were engaged in the 3rd day during Pickett's Charge and it is said that this brigade pushed the furthest into the Federal lines behind the stone wall. The regiment suffered 39 killed and 159 wounded.
